Black History Month Spotlight: Patient Care Coordinator Joanque Smith
Every week during Black History Month, we'll spotlight one of our Swedish caregivers who will share with us what Black history means to them.
Constant change is not something new to Joanque Smith. It is something that keeps her motivated and inspired in her work. Since starting at Swedish five years ago, she has held a position within Swedish Medical Group (SMG) through their float pool. Over the years, she has had an opportunity to work within patient relations, on the frontlines and in service recovery.
“I have this great opportunity working at Swedish to have this high level of engagement with patients, colleagues and leadership. I believe our strength comes from all of us working together,” she says.

The strength of coming together is also what Joanque feels Black History Month is all about. Reflecting on what the month means to her, she says, “Black history is about celebrating the impact and the ways Black and African Americans have enhanced the lives of all Americans. We all have a responsibility to uphold and be impactful in everything we do.”
“We are all standing on the shoulders of countless individuals who have paved the way for us,” Joanque adds.
Joanque celebrates those who have fought for equality and broken down barriers through action, not just in February but every day of the year.
“I believe my values should align with my actions. I celebrate Black history [throughout the year] by educating and uplifting others,” she says. “We can all celebrate with action by being the best versions of ourselves, addressing inequities, and being meaningful in the work that we do."
