Swedish is proud to announce the addition of two members to its Board of Trustees. Swedish’s 17-member board is composed of community members who volunteer their time to establish policy, promote performance improvement, provide resources and assist with organizational management and planning. The two new members will serve three-year terms.

Meredith Baty, JD, is an expert in insurance and medical malpractice defense whose work has been twice recognized by Washington Super Lawyers. Meredith has worked for several notable Washington law firms, including Keefe, King and Bowman; Kingman, Peabody, Fitzharris and Ringer, PS; and, most recently, Gibson Peabody, PS. She has represented hospitals and other healthcare facilities as well as physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians and other healthcare providers during discovery, jury trials, mediation and other legal proceedings.

Ms. Baty is a graduate of the University of Washington and the University of Michigan Law School. She is dedicated to youth and education, having served on the board of trustees for both Childhaven and Seattle’s Epiphany School, where she also chaired the governance committee. Meredith has lived in Seattle for the last 30 years. She and her husband, Brandon, have two sons, ages 10 and 12, who were both born at Swedish. Meredith’s board tenure begins March 1, 2022.

Alvin Sturdivant, Ed.D., is vice provost for Student Development at Seattle University, where he serves as a member of the university’s senior leadership team providing visionary and administrative leadership for several key departments. Dr. Sturdivant also holds adjunct faculty appointments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education. Dr. Sturdivant is dedicated to fostering success and an integrated learning experience for all Seattle University students.

Prior to joining the university, Dr. Sturdivant was the director of Housing and Residence Life at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. He has also served as the associate director of Residential Life at the University of Vermont, where he was also an adjunct faculty member in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration program. Dr. Sturdivant received his Ed.D., in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration from the University of Vermont and his Master of Education and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at North Carolina State University. His scholarly and professional interests include examining the effects of oppression and discriminatory practices in college communities, exploring the experiences of students of color in higher education, examining campus climate in the context of bias-related acts and behaviors, and exploring the experiences of African American men in higher education. Committed to the community, Dr. Sturdivant currently serves as the chair of the Meredith Mathews East Madison YMCA board of directors and as a board member for the Central District Forum for Arts and Ideas. His board tenure begins March 1, 2022.

“I am proud that we have two outstanding new board members joining the Swedish Board of Trustees,” said Guy Hudson, M.D., MBA, Regional Chief Executive Officer for Swedish. “Their unique perspectives and range of expertise from law to finance to education will provide integral guidance to our organization and our mission of providing quality care for all our patients and serving as our communities’ trusted health care partner.”
