Providence Swedish honors the lifesaving generosity of organ donors

As part of April's annual National Donate Life Month, caregivers from throughout Providence Swedish hospitals joined members of the organ transplant team for a flag raising to honor the lifesaving generosity of organ donors. 

This year's flag raising honors the generosity of organ, eye and tissue donors whose selfless decisions have saved and transformed countless lives. It also brings attention to the ongoing need for registered donors across the country.

According to Donate Life America, more than 100,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for an organ transplant, and 13 people die each day while waiting. While not everyone is able to become an organ donor, anyone can choose to register. This simple step helps ensure more lives can be saved. In Washington state, about 55% are registered donors.

Providence Swedish earns top organ donation honors from LifeCenter Northwest   

Providence Swedish First Hill has been recognized as an award-winning hospital in the 2025 annual report from LifeCenter Northwest, earning three achievement awards for excellence in organ donation and transplantation. 

Swedish First Hill received the Organ Donation Process Excellence Award for maintaining a process error rate of 5% or less, reflecting strong coordination across care teams to preserve every potential donation opportunity. It also earned the Honoring Donor Decisions Award for upholding 100% of registered donor decisions, and the Collaborative Family Support Award for achieving a 100% collaborative approach when working with families. 

Swedish First Hill was among a small group of hospitals recognized across LifeCenter Northwest’s four-state, 230-plus hospital service area, highlighting its leadership and commitment to this life-saving work. In 2025, LifeCenter Northwest supported 446 donors, resulting in 1,318 organ transplant – a record for the organization.
